• What is a Smart Grid?
    A SmartGrid is an electricity network that intelligently manages power generation (from the grid, renewables, etc.), energy storage and loads or consumption of the network. Jofemar’s Microgrid also includes consumption of electric transportation with the peculiarity that electric vehicles also act as additional storage systems, as V2G charging systems will be installed. The Smart Grid features an intelligent management system regulated by a control system which integrates all the necessary elements to improve overall system efficiency, lowering costs and maintaining the supply and reliability of the electric system. Its main objectives are:
    • Better facilitate the connection and operation of generators of all sizes and technologies.
    • Allow users to play a part in optimizing the operation of the system.
    • Significantly reduce the environmental impact of the whole electricity supply system.
    • Maintain and improve the existing high levels of system reliability, quality, and security of supply.
  • How is Factory Microgrid funded?
    The Factory Microgrid project represents an investment of around 2 million euros, of which approximately 50% is funded by the LIFE + program, the European financial instrument for the environment. The rest is funded by Jofemar and CENER- CIEMAT Foundation.

  • Which are the major benefits of smart grids?
    Smart grids increase the reliability and quality of the electricity supply, offer customers the tools to optimize their own electricity consumption and bring them closer to new products and services. Also, they are the most appropriate technology to improve efficiency in the distribution of energy flows, while promoting environmental sustainability.
  • What are renewable energies?
    Renewable energies are those which come from physical phenomena and virtually inexhaustible natural sources. The most frequently used nowadays are solar, wind, hydro and geothermal resources. The potential of tides, waves and biomass as renewables is currently being investigated.
  • What is an electric vehicle? What are its major benefits?
    EVs are those vehicles either fully or partially propelled by an electric engine powered by batteries. These batteries are recharged through a power outlet. Its main advantages include:
    • Recharging an electric vehicle is significantly cheaper than refueling an internal combustion engine vehicle.
    • They avoid greenhouse gases emissions and their manufacturing process is usually more environmentally friendly.
    • Electric motors provide quiet, smooth operation, with hardly any vibrations, and stronger acceleration. They also require less maintenance than conventional vehicles.
    • Reduction of energy dependence. Electricity is a domestic energy source.
    • Savings in car inspections as they need not test gases or oil, fluids and filters substitutions.
  • How can I recharge my EV?
    There are two different methods:
    • Conventional recharge, which uses the same electrical current and voltage than the one used in our homes; that is, low voltage. The charging process of the battery varies between 6 and 8 hours. This solution is the most suitable for recharging electric vehicles overnight in the garage of a house or in a factory.
    • Quick charge, which employs more electric intensity and reaches an autonomy range of about 60 km in approximately 10 minutes. This method requires a more specific infrastructure.
  • How much does an electric vehicle cost?
    Nowadays electric vehicles are more expensive than traditional combustion vehicles, especially when they feature Lithium batteries. However, both the cost of the energy that powers them and their maintenance are cheaper. Moreover, these cars can also benefit from different plans and incentive programs.
  • What does Jofemar offer regarding electric mobility?
    Jofemar offers, through its subsidiary Hidronew XXII, both electric vehicles and the entire charging stations’ infrastructure and its installation.
  • What is the approximate consumption of an electric vehicle?
    EVs consumption varies between 16kWh / 100km for urban vehicles and 30kWh / 100km for a microbus. This technology is under development, so these consumptions are being constantly optimized.
  • What autonomy range do EVs perform?
    The autonomy of an electric vehicle depends both on the model and the type of battery. With lithium batteries they can reach 150 km. This technology is constantly being studied so these ranges are being improved.
  • Is it cheaper than gasoline?
    Depending on the size of the vehicle. For an average consumption of 16 kWh / 100km, the approximate cost of recharging at night can be around 1.5 € / 100 km, compared to 6 € / 100 km (minimum) of a traditional combustion vehicle equivalent in size (estimate obtained from the IDEA database and the average price of gasoline in Spain in 2010).
  • Which electric vehicles accept fast charging?
    Currently, the CHAdeMO is the most widespread worldwide fast charge protocol. There are different manufacturers that incorporate fast charging CHAdeMO interface, such as those developed by Jofemar, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, PSA Peugeot-Citroën. Example of these vehicles are Mitsubishi iMiEV, Nissan LEAF, Peugeot iOn, Citroën C-Zero, etc.
  • What is Industry 4.0?
    It is a term coined by the German government to describe the smart factory, a vision of computerized manufacturing processes, all interconnected by the Internet of Things (IOT). The new concept industry 4.0 is expected to be capable of driving fundamental changes that will lead to the fourth industrial revolution. The smart factory is characterized by adaptability, resource efficiency and ergonomics, as well as by the integration of customers and business partners in business and value processes.
